Middle Zone

(south of Howard an east of DesPlaines)

Note -- Basic fare applies to any person 12 years or older, reduced fare applies to children 7 to 11, also to a child under 7 traveling with a person ot paying a fare (such as a CTA employee, cop, or public health nurse)

10/01/47 - fare 10 cents surface (5 cents reduced); 12 cents rapid transit (5 cents reduced). 12 cent rapid transit tokens sold at face value

NOTE - passenger tranfering from surface to rapid transit pays 2 cent surcharge to ticket agent

05/11/48 - fare increased to 11 cents surface, 13 cents rapid transit; no change in reduced rate

05/30/48 - began Archer Express bus service at 15 cents (7 cents reduced). Passengers transfering from regular surface routes pay 4 cent surcharge, reduced pay 2 cents. Full-fare passengers transfering from rapid transit pay 2 cents surcharge

06/20/48 - fare increased to 13 cents surface, 15 cents rapid transit; reduced fare increased to 6 cents. Express bus fare made same as rapid transit fare.

10/15/49 - fare increased to 15 cents surface, 17 cents rapid transit and express bus; reduced fare increased to 7 cents. Began shuttle fare of 10 cents on train-station shuttle routes.

12/04/49 - began South Chicago Express bus service at express bus rate

06/19/50 - began selling 15 cent surface tokens at face value

08/01/51 - fare increased to 17 cents surface, 18 cents rapid transit and express bus; reduced fare increased to 8 cents. Surcharge on transfering from regular surface routes to rapid transit or express buses reduced to 1 cent. Discontinued train-station shuttle fare rate.

06/01/52 - fare increased to 20 cents on all services; reduced fare increased to 10 cents. Surface tokens still sold at 17 cents each, and reduced fare tokens now available at 5 for 40 cents. Surcharge of 1 cent if using surface token to ride express buses (originating or transfering)

10/01/52 - surface tokens sold for 5 for 85 cents, rapid transit tokens for 5 for 90 cents. Eliminate express bus surcharge on use of surface token. Begin shuttle fare rate of 10 cents (5 cents reduced) on train-station services.

09/07/53 - eliminate reduced fare tokens.

04/22/54 - eliminate all surface and rapid transit tokens. New "CTA" tokens sold for 5 for 1.00. Eliminated reduced-rate shuttle fare.

09/56 - reduced fare extended to high school students. School-hours only ID card issued free, all-day use ID card issued for 1.00

07/04/57 - fare increased to 25 cents, tokens sold for 10 for 2.25. Shuttle fare increased to 13 cents.

09/01/57 - reduced fare increased to 13 cents. Begin selling new reduced-fare tokens at 4 for 45 cents

09/59 - charge for all-day high school student ID card increased to 2.00

12/01/59 - reduced fare increased to 15 cents. Full-fare tokens discontinued, reduced fare tokens increased to 4 for 50 cents. Shuttle fare increased to 15 cents.

07/61 - discontinued all-day high-school student ID cards, began charging 1.00 for school hours only ID cards

07/23/61 - begin charging 5 cents for transfers, reduced fare decreased to 12 cents, reduced fare tokens sold at 12 cents face value.

09/14/64 - began charging a 15 cent surcharge (12 cents reduced) on #111A-Vincennes Express bus line for all northbound riders boarding south of express portion of route and all southbound riders broarding north of express portion of route (Cermak to 75th)

11/05/67 - fare increased to 30 cents. Shuttle fare increased to 20 cents. Decreased reduced-fare surcharge on #111A Express bus to 10 cents. Began collecting 10 cent surcharge from full-fare passengers only using west sububan stations on Congress, Douglas, or Lake rapid transit and #21B Douglas Extension bus

12/19/68 - fare increased to 40 cents, reduced fare increased to 20 cents. Reduced fare tokens eliminated. Shuttle fare increased to 30 cents. Increased reduced-fare surcharge on #111A Express bus to 20 cents. Restricted surcharge to boading passengers only at west suburban rapid transit stations.

02/20/69 - eliminated surcharge at Douglas rapid transit stations.

04/20/69 - senior citizens over 65 now eligible for reduced fares 9am-3pm Mon-Sat, 7am-midnite Sunday

09/28/69 - discontinued #111A Vincennes Express service

11/03/69 - resumed sale of full and reduced fare tokens at face value in connection with conversion of bus system to exact fare

02/01/70 - began #40 O'Hare Express bus service with 20 cent surcharge (25 cent reduced), including free transfer.

07/08/70 - fare increased to 45 cents, transfers increased to 10 cents. Shuttle fare increased to 35 cents. #40 surcharge increased to 25 cents (30 cents reduced)

12/20/70 - #40 surcharge increased to 30 cents for all riders

06/03/71 - began #40 service to International Towers rush hours, with a surcharge of 25 cents (30 cents reduced)

10/22/72 - senior citizen reduced fare hours increased to 9am-3pm, 7pm-10p Mon-Fri, 9am-10pm Saturday, 7 am-10 pm Sunday

11/05/72 - senior citizen reduced fare hours to all times

05/26/73 - replaced #40 International Towers service with regular-fare route #64 service

12/16/73 - eliminated surcharge at west suburban Lake and Congress raid transit stations and on #21B buses.

01/07/74 - revised transfer rules to allow riding in any direction on any route in first hour

03/04/74 - decreased Sunday fare to 25 cents (10 cents reduced)

06/02/74 - began selling Sunday Supertransfers at 70 cents (45 cents reduced)

04/07/75 - began local fare of 25 cents in Schiller Park on #80A-West Irving Park

12/15/75 - handicapped now eligible for reduced fare. Transfers for seniors and handicapped reduced to 5 cents. Decreased reduced-fare surcharge on #40 to 15 cents.

09/76 - increased high-school student school-hour ID card to 2.00

09/05/76 - increased fare to 50 cents (25 cents reduced). Sunday fare increased to 30 cents (15 cents reduced). Sunday Supertransfer increased to 80 cents (50 cents reduced). Shuttle are increased to 40 cents. Surcharge on #40 decreased to 25 cents (10 cents reduced). Eliminated local fare on #80A buses.

02/01/78 - began sale of monthly pass at 25.00

11/04/79 - increased fare to 60 cents (reduced unchanged). Sunday fare increased to 35 cents. Sunday Supertransfer increased to 95 cents. Child/student transfers decreased to 5 cents. Monthly pass increased to 30.00. Increased #40 surcharge to 30 cents.

01/01/81 - increased fare to 80 cents (35 cents reduced). Sunday fare increased to 50 cents (20 cents reduced). Sunday Supertransfer increased to 1.20 (60 cents reduced). Shuttle fare increased to 55 cents. Decreased #40 surcharge to 10 cents (5 cents reduced).

02/01/81 - monthly pass increased to 35.00

03/01/81 - began reduced fare monthly pass at 15.00

07/06/81 - increased fare to 90 cents (40 cents reduced). Eliminated Sunday fares, same apply all week. Increased Sunday Supertransfer to 1.40 (70 cents reduced). Increased reduced-fare transfer charge to 10 cents. Began charging 10 cent full, 5 cent reduced fare surcharge for monthly pass use, issuing free transfers upon payment to avoid multiple surcharges. Began 10 cent surcharge on express bus routes #2, 6, 99, 99M, 147, 162. Began 20 cent surcharge on Evanston Express southbound only between Howard and Belmont. Shuttle fare increased to 60 cents. Increased reduced-fare #40 surcharge to 10 cents.

07/08/81 - eliminated surcharge on outbound express buses outside of downtown

08/01/81 - increased monthly pass to 40.00 (18.00 reduced) and eliminated surcharge

10/02/81 - decreased full fare token rate to 10 for 8.50

01/04/82 - discontinue surcharge on inbound express buses, increased surcharge to 20 cents on express buses leaving downown. Began surcharge on new express bus routes #14 and 164

03/08/82 - applied shuttle fare of 60 cents to rides towards or from IC Electric stations 47th to 79th or on South Chicago branch east of King Dr only when ppresenting valid IC weekly or monthly ticket.

02/09/86 - increased fare on rapid transit to 1.00 (50 cents reduced). Passengers presenting a bus transfer or token pay 10 cents surcharge. Monthly pass increased to 44.00 (22.00 reduced). Sunday supertransfer increased to 1.75 (85 cents reduced). Decreased reduced rate token rate to 20 for 8.00. Increased transfer to 25 cents (15 cents reduced) and revised transfer rules to two hours or three rides, excluding route of issue. Eliminated shuttle fare rate and surcharge on #40.

03/01/86 - increased monthly pass to 46.00 (23.00 reduced)

03/30/86 - introduced 14-day pass at 23.00 (11.50 reduced)

05/04/86 - revised transfer rules to allow use on route of issue except weekday rush hours

01/03/88 - increased bus fare to 1.00 (50 reduced) to match rapid transit. Increased monthly pass to 50.00 (25.00 reduced). Increased 14-day pass to 25.00 and eliminated reduced-rate 14-day pass. Increased tokens to 10 for 9.50 (20 for 10.00 reduced)

01/30/89 - discontinued collecting surcharge from pass holders on Evanston Express

02/06/89 - begin selling 20 cent surcharge tickets at all Evanston stations, increased cash surcharge paid on Evanston Express trains south of Howard to 40 cents.

04/29/90 - increased rapid transit and rush hour bus fare to 1.25. Decreased reduced-rate fare to 40 cents, 45 cents o rapid transit and rush hour buses. Increased monthly pass to 60.00 (no increase in reduced fare pass). Replaced 14-day pass with weekday-only pass for 45.00. Decreased token rate to 10 for 9.00 (20 for 8.00 reduced fare)

12/29/91 - increased rapid transit and rush hur bus fare to 1.50 (65 cents reduced), Increased non-rush bus fare to 1.20 (55 cents reduced). Increased transfer charge to 30 cents. Increased reduced-rate monthly pass to 30.00. Eliminated weekday-only monthly pass. Began weekly pass for 15.00. Increased token rate to 10 for 12.00 (20 for 11.00 reduced). Increased surcharge on express buses leaving downtown to 50 cents. Inceased Evanston surcharge tickets to 25 cents, cash surcharge on Evanston Express trains south of Howard to 50 cents.

08/30/92 - replaced full-fare monthly and weekly passes with 45.00 monthly and 12.00 weekly permits entitling holder to travel at a rate of 25 cents a ride, with no transfers issued.

01/31/93 - increased non-rush bus fare to 1.25. Increased reduced rate fares to 75 cents on rapid transit and rush hour bus, 60 cents on non-rush hour bus. Increased token rate to 10 for 12.50 (20 for 12.00 reduced). Replaced permits with monthly passes for 78.00, weekday-only monthly passes for 66.00, and weekly passes for 20.50. Increased reduced-fare monthly pass to 33.00.

07/01/93 - increased reduced-fare monthly pass to 35.00.

08/29/93 - decreased monthly pass rate to 72.00, weekly pass rate to 18.50, reduced-fare monthly pass to 33.00. Discontinued weekday-only monthly pass.

07/31/94 - restored monthly pass rate to 78.00, weekly pass to 20.50, reduced-fare monthly pass to 35.00.

01/01/95 - increased fare to 1.50 (75 cents reduced) all hours Mon-Fri on buses. Decreased Sat-Sun rapid transit fare to 1.25 (60 cents reduced). Decreased transfer rate to 25 cents (10 cents reduced). Discontinued monthly and weekly passes except for handicapped.

08/01/95 - restored monthly passes at 88.00 (44.00 reduced)

08/26/95 - increased Sat-Sun fares to 1.50 (75 cents reduced)

West Zone

(Westchester Rapid Transit)

10/01/47 - local fare 8 cents (4 cents reduced). Thru fare to east of Desplaines 15 cents (9 cents reduced)

NOTE - a rider going from West Zone to North Zone paid extra fare twice, for a total of 18 cents (13 cents reduced)

05/11/48 - local fare increased to 11 cents (5 cents reduced), same as middle zone surface fare. Thru fare increased to 20 cents full rate. No thru fare for reduced rate riders, pay second reduced rate fare.

06/20/48 - local rate increased to 13 cents (6 cents reduced), no change in thru rate.

10/15/49 - local rate increased to 15 cents (7 cents reduced), no change in thru rate.

08/01/51 - local rate increased to 17 cents (8 cents reduced), no change in thru rate.

12/09/51 - replaced rapid transit with Westchester bus

06/01/52 - local rate increased to 20 cents (10 reduced). Thru rate increased to 45 cents.

04/22/54 - thru rate decreased to 30 cents.

11/28/55 - begin Evanston Shoppers Special service, 10 cent surcharge for ides between Howard and Loop.

07/04/57 - local rate increased to 25 cents (reduced rate unchanged), thru rate increased to 38 cents. Discontinued Evanston Shoppers Special.

09/01/57 - local reduced rate increased to 13 cents

09/07/59 - local rate eliminated, all riders pay 38 cents (26 cents reduced)

12/01/59 - fare increased to 40 cents (30 reduced)

07/23/61 - reduced fare decreased to 24 cents. Begin charging 5 cents additional for transfer.

11/05/67 - fare increased to 45 cents (reduced rate unchanged)

12/19/68 - fare increased to 55 cents (40 reduced)

07/08/70 - fare increased to 60 cents (reduced rate unchanged). Transfer charge increased to 10 cents)

03/04/74 - decreased Sunday fare to 25 cents (10 cents reduced)

12/15/75 - reduced fare decreased to 30 cents. Decreased reduced-fare transfer charge for senoirs and handicapped to 5 cents

09/05/76 - began charging middle-zone fare for local rides of 50 cents (25 reduced). Began charging surcharge of 40 cents (30 child/student, 25 senior/handicapped) to transfer to Congress rapid transit.

01/01/78 - eliminated all additional fare of #17 buses. Charge normal middle zone fares.

North Zone

(Evanston and Skokie Rapid Transit)

10/01/47 - local fare 8 cents (4 cents reduced). Thru fare to south of Howard 15 cents (9 cents reduced)

NOTE - a rider going from North Zone to West Zone paid extra fare twice, for a total of 18 cents (13 cents reduced)

03/27/48 - Skokie rapid transit replaced by #97 Skokie bus. Local fare increased to 10 cents (5 cents reduced). 15 cent surcharge to Chicago (reduced pay second 5 cent fare)

03/29/48 - #97 bus city fare on Howard St. All pay enter eastbound, pay leave westbound.

05/11/48 - Evanston and Skokie local fare increased to 11 cents (5 cents reduced), same as middle zone surface fare. Evanston and Skokie thru fare increased to 20 cents full rate. No thru fare for reduced rate riders, pay second reduced rate fare.

06/20/48 - local rate increased to 13 cents (6 cents reduced), no change in thru rate.

10/15/49 - local rate increased to 15 cents (7 cents reduced), no change in thru rate.

08/01/51 - local rate increased to 17 cents (8 cents reduced), no change in thru rate.

06/01/52 - local rate increased to 20 cents (10 reduced). Thru rate increased to 45 cents.

11/15/53 - begin #155A-Devon/Pratt bus. North zone fare charged in Lincolnwood.

01/15/54 - discontinued #155A buses

04/22/54 - thru rate decreased to 30 cents.

07/04/57 - local rate increased to 25 cents (reduced rate unchanged), thru rate increased to 38 cents. Thru rate also applied to Evanston Express riders between Howard and Loop.

09/01/57 - local reduced rate increased to 13 cents

09/07/59 - local rate in Evanston and Skokie eliminated, all riders pay 38 cents (26 cents reduced). #97 bus on Howard remains at middle zone rate.

12/01/59 - fare increased to 40 cents (30 reduced)

07/23/61 - reduced fare decreased to 24 cents. Begin charging 5 cents additional for transfer.

04/20/64 - begin Skokie Swift rapid transit service. Fare of 45 cents (29 cents) includes transfer.

11/05/67 - fare increased to 45 cents (reduced rate unchanged) (Skokie Swift 50 cents)

12/19/68 - fare increased to 55 cents (40 cents reduced), Skokie Swift 60 cents (45 cents reduced)

07/08/70 - fare increased to 60 cents (reduced rate unchanged). Transfer charge increased to 10 cents. Skokie Swift to 70 cents (50 cents reduced)

07/30/72 - fare for travel to Chicago increased to 75 cents (60 cents reduced), Skokie Swift to 85 cents (70 cents reduced). Begin selling same-day round-trip tickets for use in Evanston for 1.10 (80 cents reduced), and for use between Evanston and Skokie for 1.40 (1.00 reduced). No additional fare collected from riders traveling to Evanston or Skokie, but transfer required on Skokie Swift. #97 bus changed to pay-enter westbound.

09/12/73 - CTA begins Evanston local bus service at 25 cents for all riders with free local transfer. Reduce fare on Evanston rapid transit between Central and South Blvd for local riders to 25 cents, with free transfer to Evanston local buses

01/07/74 - began exchanging free transfers with Nortran for rides within Evanston

03/04/74 - began #13-Southwest Skokie bus service. Middle zone fares south of Pratt, local fare north of Pratt of 25 cents, thru fare of 75 cents (60 reduced) southbound. Exchange free transfers with Nortran for rides within Skokie. Decreased Sunday fares to 25 cents (10 cents reduced) in Evanston and Skokie.

04/07/74 - reduced fare for local riders to Evanston at Linden to 25 cents, began free transfers to Wilmette local buses

06/16/74 - Evanston round-trip ticket discontinued

10/14/74 - began local fare of 25 cents in Skokie on #97 buses, with free transfer exchange with Nortran for rides within Skokie

12/15/75 - decreased thru reduced fare to Chicago to 35 cents (Skokie Swift 40 cents for seniors/handicapped, 45 cents for child/student). Decreased reduced-fare transfer charge for senoirs and handicapped to 5 cents. Evanston/Skokie round-trip ticket discontinued.

09/05/76 - increased thru fare to Chicago to 80 cents (40 cents reduced), Skokie Swift to 90 cents, 45 cents seniors/handicapped, 50 cents child/student). Increased Sunday fare to 30 cents (reduced rate unchanged). #13 bus discontinued.

10/17/76 - began issuing transfers to Chicago on Evanston local buses at 55 cents (30 cents seniors/handicapped, 35 child/student). Decreased reduced local fare in Evanston and Skokie to 15 cents, increased local fare in Skokie to 30 cents. City of Evanston subsidized full fare by 5 cents.

01/01/78 - elimnated surcharges for travel from Evanston/Skokie to Chicago and on Evanston Express. Basic fare of 50 cents (25 cents reduced) charged. Local fares in Skokie and Evanston retained. Reduced fare from Evanston buses to Chicago retained.

11/04/79 - Evanston subsidy of local bus fares discontinued. Local fare in Evanston and Skokie increased to 35 cents (reduced rate unchanged)

01/01/81 - increased Sunday and local fares to 50 cents (20 cents reduced)

07/06/81 - increased Sunday fares to 90 cents (40 reduced). Increased local fares to 60 cents (25 cents reduced)

02/09/86 - eliminated local fares. Regular fares charged in Evanston and Skokie. 20 cent surcharge on Evanston Express southbound between Howard and Belmont.

01/30/89 - eliminated collection of Evanston Express surcharge from pass users

02/06/89 - began selling surcharge tickets at Evanston stations and Howard for 20 cents. Increased cash surcharge paid on train to 40 cents.
