MAN (Maschinenfabrik Augsburg-Nürnberg), a Germany-based builder, first attempted to enter the US market in 1978-79, making an agreement with AM General of Mishawaka IN to final assemble articulated bus shells imported from Germany. Later, in 1981. a US manufacturing plant was established in Cleveland NC where complete buses were assembled. Production continued until 1988, when a second order of 485 40-footers was cancelled after production had started because of an injunction in Chicago prohibiting further purchases of non-accessible buses, after which the parent corporation decided that the US subsidiary was unprofitable and would remain so, and shut it down on very short notice.

SERIES 1 - AM GENERAL ASSEMBLED

This series consisted of two subseries: 150 buses of MAN model "297", type SG-220-18-2 (Stadt Gelenke (city articulated)-220hp-18 meters (60-foot)-2 doors) built for the Municipality of Metroplitan Seattle, and 248 plus a demo MAN model "298". Only difference was that 298's were air-conditioned, however some batches were only 55 feet (16.5 meters) long. AMG models were 10260-6 for the 297 and 10260-6-1 or 10255-6-1 for the 298.

Eleven incomplete body shells were burned in a brush fire on plant grounds while awaiting their turn into the plant, and eleven additional shells were shipped from Germany as replacements (#0151-0161). Subseqently, shell 0046 was found repairable, was completed, and sold to Metro Seattle as an additional bus.

SERIES 2 - CLEVELAND PLANT PRODUCTION

Initially, only articulated buses were built. Models were 782 (SG-310-18-2L), 783 (SG-310-16.5-2L), and 784 (SG-310-18-2L). Later, 783 was redesignated "293". When 40-foot bus production started, all were model 792 (SL-40102L), with Seattle variants SL-40102A and SL-40102LM (Methanol). Charlotte got 96-inch wide 792's (SL-4096A). Trolley buses were 797's (SGT-310). An aborted Chicago order was to be model 892 (SL-40102A?)

CLEVELAND PLANT SERIALS

Note that MAN serials increase in two places. The last four digits increase sequencially among all models, while the two previous ("counting numbers") increase within each model.
