Lengthy extract from the Denver & Rio Grande's first annual report, which notes that grading on that road began in March 1871, the track reached Colorado Springs on 27 October 1871, and the road was opened for business on January 1, 1872. Track reached Pueblo on 15 June 1872. As of the date of the report, 1 April 1873, the road owned 12 locomotives, seven passenger cars, four baggage, mail and express cars, four open excursion cars, 258 freight cars, 22 dump cars and two snow plows, and had on hand the trucks for 22 freight cars and one passenger car. During 1872, there had been built at the shops 150 freight cars of the 8-wheel pattern, two baggage & mail cars and three observation cars. Three additional locomotives had been ordered, as of the date of the report. (Pitchard, Deseret Evening News, 2 September 1873)
