Union Pacific 900000-series Maintenance of Way Cars

This file was last updated on January 22, 2012.

This roster is based on the car dispositions shown in David Seidel's various works, up to April 2004. Additional information is being added as it becomes available from multiple sources.

All cars renumbered to the MW 900000 series prior to 1959 were initially renumbered to similar "0xxx" MW series numbers (example: 900596 was initally numbered as 0596). Beginning in 1959, these cars were renumbered to their later 900000 series MW numbers. The renumber date to the 900000 series is shown when available.

All cars renumbered to the MW 900000 series numbers after 1959 were renumbered directly, without an earlier "0xxx" series number.

MW is used by Union Pacific to designate non-revenue equipment used for maintenance of way, i.e., track, bridges and buildings, as well as training and testing. Some company records show the numbers as MW 900000, others show it as 900000 MW.

Union Pacific's own designation of maintenance of way equipment was originally known as "Roadway" equipment. Depending on source material available, all 900000-series cars were and are owned by Union Pacific for the purposes of maintaining the track and right-of-way of the railroads (OSL, LA&SL, OWRR&N and others) it leased from 1936 through 1987.

The equipment was "Vacated" by the owning railroad (OSL, OWRR&N, LA&SL), and "sold" as salvage to UP ownership.
