Overview

The UP 9100 series cars were built in 1939 to capture the market for high speed freight express shipments (boxcars placed in passenger trains).

The UP 9200 series cars were built in 1940-1941 to increase the fleet of available cars.

The UP 9300 series cars were built in 1964 as Postal Storage cars (for shipments of magazines and catalogs); renumbered to the 24300 series and changed to Express cars.

After 1974-1975, with the end of UP's passenger service, the cars were renumbered to the 912000 and 915500 series and assigned to non-revenue service and used by UP's Store Department to ship company material.

UP - Omaha, 1939

Not all of the listed renumberings actually occurred. When those cars were renumbered to the 24xxx series, they were removed from Express service and lost their streamliner paint scheme, being painted freight car red. What I found was that not all of the 9000-series to 24000-series renumberings were actually done. In particular I recall, 9149 (now at the Colorado RR Museum) went straight from 9149 to 912040 - still in streamliner colors. It apparently was never numbered 24149 nor painted freight car red. (Dick Harley, email dated September 5, 2008)

Dick Harley provided the following timeline for the 9100-series Express Cars:

UP 24400 Series (former Baggage cars)

Using Baggage Cars as Express Cars

In April 1969, Union Pacific reassigned 89 recently retired (or retired for the purpose) former Baggage/Postal Storage cars in the 5600-, 5700-, and two 5900-series cars. The cars were assigned numbers in the 24400-series. The cars were found to be unsuitable for express freight service because of their low roofs, which restricted the use of fork lifts inside the cars. Also, the existing 60-foot cars (24300 series) were able to handle the limited express traffic was being offered to the railroad. Most of the former baggage cars were reassigned to Roadway service and renumbered to the 9043200-series numbers during 1970. Some cars may not have received either their assigned Express Service 24400-series number, or their assigned Roadway Service 904200-series number prior to final retirement and sale.
