Using Baggage Cars as Express Cars
In April 1969, Union Pacific reassigned 89 recently retired (or retired for the purpose) former Baggage/Postal Storage cars in the 5600-, 5700-, and 5900-series. The cars were assigned numbers in the 24400-series. Apparently the idea did not work and most were reassigned to MW service and renumbered to the 9043200-series numbers during 1970. Some cars may not have received either their 24400-series number, or their assigned 904200-series number prior to final retirement and sale.
In a nutshell it was a short time use of the baggage cars in "express" freight service. The service really never got on and the 60 foot cars (24300-series) could handle what business there was. It looks like only a few baggage cars were renumbered. Most were placed in storage and then went into MofW service with the rest sold off. The main problem with the baggage cars (and for that matter the 60ft express boxcars) was the low roof in the cars - it just didn't work out for any type of freight service at the time.
