  2. UP 1990 (ex MKT 333) and UP 1995 (ex MKT 339) were retired by UP; leaving 16 units to be renumbered to UP 1783-1799 in September 1997; six units actually renumbered prior to being assigned to UP 283-299 group.
  3. Original total of 20 units, built for Illinois Central; to Illinois Central Gulf in 1972; lease to ICG expired and 18 units were leased to MKT in 1985; two ICG units were left out of the lease to MKT: ICG 9510 and ICG 9512; ICG 9510 was purchased by ICG following a March 1975 wreck, and was not transferred to MKT; later sold by ICG in 1994 to New England Central 9510; ICG 9512 (EMD 35677, Feb 1970) was rejected by MKT in original lease from Helm Financial due to poor mechanical condition, leaving the MKT number 336 blank and not used; ICG 9512 was later used by Helm in their national lease fleet as HLCX 9712, then to Chicago, Missouri & Western 2048, then to Gateway Western 2048; ICG 9503 (later MKT 328 and UP 1985) carried ICG's commemorative bicentennial paint scheme as ICG 1776, from June 1975 through September 1976, as replacement to ICG 9510, the original commemorative unit, which carried the special scheme for less than one month, until it was wrecked in March 1975.

  3. Built as MP 900 series units, renumbered to MP 2000 series units in 1974; seven units renumbered to UP 2300 series numbers in 1986.
  4. Part of a 64 unit group of locomotives (ex MP 2009-2073) previously on 15 year lease to MP, which were returned to their owner/lessor by UP upon expiration of the leases in July 1987 and January 1988; sold to Helm Financial; 35 of these 64 units were rebuilt by Grand Trunk's Battle Creek, Mich., shops and renumbered to GT 5700-5734.
  5. The above 29 units were leased to other roads by Helm Financial (HL) until they arrived back on Union Pacific in late February 1989 in their original MP/UP (HL) 2000/2300 series road numbers.
  6. UP 315 (ex UP 1815) was the first of this group to be renumbered to the 300 series, completed on 25 January 2000.

Built as Delaware & Hudson 7601-7620 group; D&H purchased by Guilford Transportation Industries in 1983; units rebuilt in July through November 1984 by Morrison Knudsen and renumbered to Guilford/Boston & Maine 350-359 (not in D&H 7601-7620 series sequence) (see Pacific RailNews, Issue 258, May 1985); lease expired on 31 July 1996 and the units were returned to Connell Leasing.

  1. Total of 15 units to be renumbered to UP 349-363 group; built as MP 900 series units, renumbered to MP 2000 series units in 1974; renumbered to UP series (same numbers) in October 1986 through August 1994 (UP 2087, ex MP 2087, was the first, completed on 3 October 1986, and UP 2103, ex MP 2103, was the last, completed on 2 August 1994).
  2. Part of a 37 unit group (ex MP 2074-2110) previously on 15-year lease to MP (lease assumed by UP), and returned to their owner/lessor upon expiration of the lease in December 1993; sold by owner/lessor to Helm Financial and held on UP property; of the 37 unit group, 17 units were leased to CSX Transportation as HATX units (see UP 330-346, above); two units went to Montana Western; two units went to Alton & Southern; and 16 units were leased by UP in May 1994; 15 units remain of the 16 units leased to UP; UP 2074 was wrecked in November 1994 and retired.
  3. Assigned UP 1849-1863 in September 1997, no units renumbered; assigned UP 349-363 in December 1999.
  4. UP 354 (ex 2089) was the first of this group to be renumbered, completed on 5 February 2000.

Notes:

  1. UP 362, as UP 2103 (ex MP 2103), was the last former Missouri Pacific unit to be repainted to Union Pacific, completed on 2 August 1994, 11 years and eight months after the 1982 merger of UP, MP, and WP.

UP 365-376 and 391-399 (21 units) were owned by First Security Bank of Utah and leased to C&NW, then to UP; the lease expired and the units were sold to Locomotive Leasing Partners (LLPX) and leased again to UP; dynamic braking was added during April-October 2000 for LLPX by VMV Enterprises, Paducah, Kentucky, and units were further modified for service on UP by UP at Jenks Shops in North Little Rock, Arkansas, including cab air conditioning and repainting from C&NW to UP; completed between June and November 2000.
  5. Assigned UP 1865-1899 in June 1995, one unit (UP 1866) renumbered; assigned UP 365-399 in December 1999.

  1. The lease on C&NW 4612-4625 (14 units) ended on 31 January 2000, and the units were returned to their owner/lessor, CitiCorp; moved for storage to National Railway Equipment at Silvis and Mount Vernon, Illinois
