UP 2059 Apr 1975 74675-20 UP 559 21 Sep 2001

General Notes:

  1. Original total of 60 units.
  2. Immediately upon delivery in April 1975, UP 2040-2059 (20 units) were stored at Council Bluffs due to a business slowdown; part of a group of 52 new units (along with U30Cs 2905-2919 and SD40-2s 3288-3304) that were given acceptance runs between Omaha and North Platte, then placed into storage to avoid having to pay on their equipment trusts, which wouldn't be activated until the units actually entered service; the new units were all in service by March 1976.
  3. Later equipped with cab signals and Automatic Cab Signal equipment at each end for either-end-leading operation along Union Pacific's lines in Nebraska, Wyoming, and along the Columbia River.
  4. UP's GP38-2s in the 2000-2059 series were generally assigned to the Pacific Northwest region until about 1987. At that time, a group of about 20 to 25 units, from UP 2000 to UP 2020 or 2025 were transferred east to the Nebraska Division to provide local switching power that required CCS cab signals for mainline running (replacing retired GP30s). The rest of the GP38-2s, numbered to UP 2059 (and now as UP 559), remain in the Pacific Northwest through 2006. (information from Chris Faulk via email, October 8, 2006)
  5. All 60 units were delivered with the "We Can Handle It" lettering scheme in 1974 and 1975. When UP changed lettering schemes in late 1975 to the 20-inch long hood lettering and medallion under the cab, very few GP38-2s received this new lettering scheme. (UP 2050 did receive the new lettering scheme, along with about ten others in the higher series numbers). After UP changed lettering schemes again in 1980 by moving the medallion to the nose, most of the remaining GP38-2s were repainted into this later lettering scheme during the early 1980s. A few of the 60 units escaped the lettering changes well into the 1990s, including UP 2000 and 2001, which remained in the "We Can handle It" scheme into the mid 1990s. (information from Chris Faulk via email, October 8, 2006)
  6. Renumbered to UP 500-559 (not in 2000-series number sequence).

Note:

1. UP 2026 was wrecked in June 1982; moved to Omaha, Nebraska, and stored until retired on 10 January 1987; sold to Precision National (without trucks, loaded on flat car) on 20 April 1987; stored at Precision's Mount Vernon, Illinois, facility until Precision's bankruptcy and sale to National Railway Equipment in December 1997; rebuilt by NRE to Ferrocarril del Pacifico SA (Fepasa, Chile) SD39-2M and renumbered to 2359 in July 1998. One of 14 locomotives completed, including ex MKT GP40s 172 and 179, and ex UP/MP GP40 611 (ex CRI&P 351). (Extra 2200 South, issue 112, March 1997, page 14; Extra 2200 South, Issue 114, February 1998, page 18) (Locomotive Notes II, Number 200, January-February 1998, page 29; Number 210, March-April 1998, page 29, reported by Alan Miller)

UP 2060 MP 909 MP 2060 Oct 1972 72759-7 19 Mar 1986 26 Jan 1988 1

General Notes:

  1. Built as MP 909 (part of MP 903-912 group), renumbered to MP 2060 (part of 2054-2063 group) in 1974.
  2. One of three units in the MP 2054-2063 group to be renumbered to UP; the other two were MP 2058 and 2059, renumbered to UP 2384 and 2385.
  3. All units in the MP 2054-2063 group were retired by UP on 26 January 1988 upon expiration of the 15 year lease on 30 December 1987, and returned to their owner/lessor. The owner/lessor sold the units to a joint venture between Helm Financial and Grand Trunk Corp. Ownership was split between Helm (three units) and GT (seven units, including UP 2060), with those seven units eventually becoming GT 5700 class units (renumbered to GT 4900 class in January to March 1997). Three of GT's seven units (MP 2054, UP 2060, MP 2062) were leased to SP while awaiting their turn through GT's Battle Creek, Mich., rebuild program.

Notes:

  1. In national lease service from January 1988 until renumbered to GT 5715 on 15 July 1988.
