General Notes:

  1. All 42 units leased from Progress Rail as a short-term lease (Peak Power) fleet during times of motive power shortage.
  2. All 42 units renumbered beginning in early October 2003 from retired SD40-2 and SD40T-2 units at either VMV in Paducah, Kentucky, or Progress Rail in Somerset, Texas.
  3. Units retired prior to startup of Peak Power lease, were out of service and needed repairs; after buying them, Progress Rail made the needed repairs and returned those units to operating status; units retired on same date as their renumbering were in operating condition at the time of their sale to Progress Rail.
  4. Four units (UP 7876, 7877, 7905, and 7906) are SD40T-2 units; all others are standard SD40-2 units.
  5. Some SD40-2 units were renumbered from UP 4000 series that were former MP units which had been in service as trailing units only, what UP calls an SD40-2B.

UP 8080, 8080B were built by Omaha Shops as UP 80, 80B; under construction for more than two years, between September 1959 and December 1961; entered road service in October 1962; operated in extensive tests on the Nebraska Division between Omaha and North Platte and Cheyenne, from October 1962 to May 1964, making its last trip on May 12, 1964.
  2. UP 8080, 8080B were renumbered from UP 80, 80B in April 1964 to avoid number conflicts with newly ordered DD35s.
  3. Total operating weight: 1,233,300 pounds, including 361,000 pound tender.

  2. UP 8003-8034 were built new as UP 3243-3274; converted to high speed 8000 class units in 1976; converted back to normal SD40-2s between June 1980 and March 1982.
  3. The original order for UP 8003-8034 (EMD 73661, UP 3243-3287) included UP 3284, 3285 which were renumbered to UP 8044, 8045 in May and April 1976; both units were renumbered back to their original numbers in August 1976 after UP decided to accept the new deliveries of SD40-2s in the new 8000 class rather than to continue to renumber SD40-2s already in service.
  4. UP 8035-8064 were renumbered to UP 3305-3334 between June 1980 and March 1982.
  5. UP 8065-8074 were renumbered to UP 3400-3409 between June 1980 and March 1982; originally to be delivered as UP 3400-3409, but in late April 1977, UP asked EMD to deliver the units with 8000-series numbers.
  6. UP 8075-8099 were renumbered to UP 3584-3608 between June 1980 and March 1982.
  7. Equipped with high speed 59:18 gear ratio.
