General Notes:

  1. Total of 91 C&NW units went to UP at merger.
  2. C&NW records show 4344 and 4457 as being unrebuilt GP7s; UP records show them as GP7R.
  3. Assigned UP 400-489 in the post-merger renumber plan; no units renumbered prior to retirement.
  4. C&NW 4120 and 4190 remained in extended service on UP because they are assigned to the former C&NW coach yard in Chicago, Illinois Because of their low end step design, they work well with the Metra bi-level commuter cars. The units were also equipped with C&NW's ATC and ATS train control used along the commuter corridor.

General Notes:

  1. Total of 23 units to UP at merger.
  2. Assigned UP 2877-2899 in post-merger renumber plan; no units renumbered prior to retirement.
  3. C&NW 6622-6643 were built as Southern Railway (SOU) SD24s, with high short hoods. Southern retired and sold 41 SD24s to Precision National Corp. in January 1978. PNC leased the units (lettered as PNC 6300s and still in Southern Railway black paint) to Milwaukee Road and later to BN. PNC had the Southern units rebuilt (by Milwaukee Road and Morrison Knudsen) during mid and late 1979 as 1,800 horsepower, non-turbocharged units. (previous SOU information changed from that previously shown, including data printed in the Withers C&NW book.)
  4. C&NW 6644-6647 were built as Union Pacific SD24s, with low short hoods. The Union Pacific SD24s were sold to PNC in November 1977 as part of the sale of 90 UP units. The UP SD24s were rebuilt to 1,800 horsepower, without turbochargers, by Morrison Knudsen in April 1980.
  5. C&NW first leased 25 units (of the original 53 units in PNC 1800 class), beginning in late November 1980, and bought 26 units from PNC on 31 March 1982. PNC called the units SD10s, C&NW called them SD18Rs. C&NW began painting the units in the then-current "Zito" yellow scheme in early August 1982.
  6. Not equipped with dynamic braking; removed at time of rebuilding for Precision National, retaining original carbody dynamic braking hatch, with openings blanked over.

Notes:

  1. C&NW 6622, 6623, 6625, 6626, 6629, and 6641 were sold to National Railway Equipment in February 1997; all six units were already stored at Oelwein, Iowa, prior to the shops' closing in 1993; sometime before 1994, C&NW 6622, 6623, 6625, and 6626 were moved to another location, while 6629 and 6641 remained next to the Running Repair building in Oelwein for almost a year, circa 1994. (Oelwein shops were later taken over by Transco Railway Products, and it was at Oelwein that NRE stored the lease-returned GP38s.) (updated information from Dustin Smith, via email, September 5, 2005)
  2. C&NW 6627 and 6637 were sold to Midwest Metallics in July 1997.
  3. C&NW 6628 was sold to Midwest Metallics in July 1997, then sold to Pacific Harbor Line 40, in Long Beach, California.
