Rebuilt from SP SD45 8837 by SP at Sacramento, California. in October 1981, using an SD40-2 electrical standards and a 3000-horsepower, 16-cylinder diesel engine, retaining its original SD45 carbody; as a result of the rebuilding, the unit was mechanically similar to the earlier SD40R rebuilds; at the same time, SP began a rebuild program for their SD45s that produced 3200-horsepower units with their 20-cylinder engines still intact.
  2. Originally painted in an experimental orange, red, and gray paint scheme; repainted to SPSF pre-merger paint scheme, and later to the standard SP gray and scarlet paint scheme.
  3. Former SP designation was SD44R; UP designation is SD40-2.

Notes:

  1. Sold to EMD on 31 October 1998; leased back to UP as UP SD40-2 4766 on 4 September 1999.
