General Notes:

  1. Built as UP 8000 as a coal-fired three-cylinder locomotive in 1925; converted to oil-fired and loaned to LA&SL in March 1929; sold to LA&SL in October 1929 and renumbered to LA&SL 8809; converted to a two-cylinder locomotive in June 1942 and renumbered to LA&SL 5090; vacated in 1954.
  2. Coal burning U.P. 8000 as built in 1925. It was a test engine and resulted in an order for nine more oil burners built in 1926 for the L.A.&S.L., 8800 to 8808. In 1929, the 8000 was loaned to the L.A.&S.L. and converted to burn oil. The 8000 was sold to the L.A.&S.L. the same year and renumbered to 8809. Later, they all received large 1800 gallon tenders like the 4-12-2 tenders only with oil bunkers. They were all rebuilt to two cylinder engines starting in 1942 and kept their tenders. The 8800 was renumbered 5090 and the rest became 5091 to 5099. They stayed on the L.A.&S.L. until moving east at the end of their service lives due to dieselization. They were all off the roster by early 1954. (Steve Solombrino, email to UP Modelers Yaho discussion group, dated July 6, 2002)
