General Notes:

  1. Total of 27 units to UP, numbered UP 2500-2526; leased from Helm Financial; rebuilt from GP40s to GP38-3s by Motive Power Industries (Boise Locomotive Co.), Boise, Idaho.
  2. Delivered to UP in February 1997 through February 1998 (UP 1000, as UP 2500 was the first, delivered on 5 February 1997, and UP 1026, as UP 2526 was the last, delivered on 11 February 1998).
  3. The rebuilding to GP38-3s included fully reconditioned cabs, 3600-gallon fuel tanks, D78 traction motors, and AR10 traction alternators, along with a Woodward CLC control system, and extended-range dynamic braking; the original 3000-horsepower turbocharged engines were replaced by 2000-horsepower, Roots-blown EMD 645 engines; the GP40-style three-fan configuration for radiator cooling was retained.
  4. UP calls these locomotives GP38-3s; MPI calls them GP38M-3s.
  5. Renumbered from UP 2500-2526.

Notes:

  1. All 27 units retired on either 15 November or 26 November 2007 and returned to owner Helm Financial; leased (sold?) by Helm to Kansas City Southern.
  2. UP 1008 (ex UP 2508) is part of a confusing pair of locomotives rebuilt by Motive Power Industries, with the other unit being UP 912 (ex UP 2412). Early reports, and previously published information, showed that both units were rebuilt from the same locomotive. As research progressed throughout the period between 1997 and 2003, locomotive historians were able to develop credible histories for both units. The above information is the best available, as of September 2006.
  3. UP 1023 was retired on 13 October 2003 upon expiration of the lease from Helm Financial; for ease of tracking in UP's computer system, following retirement, it was renumbered from UP 2523 to UP 1023 one day later, on 14 October 2003.

General Notes:

  1. Total of 60 units to UP, numbered UP 2527-2588; leased from Helm Financial; rebuilt from GP40s to GP38-2s by Boise Locomotive Co., Boise, Idaho, except UP 2551 and 2562, which were completed as GP38-3s by VMV Enterprises, Paducah, Kentucky, in February 1998.
  2. Delivered to UP in February 1998 through March 1999 (UP 1051, as UP 2551 was the first, delivered on 6 February 1998, and UP 1070, as UP 2570 was the last, delivered on 10 March 1999).
  3. The 1066 and 1071 number slots are blank and not used; UP 2566 and 2571 were also blank and not used.
  4. The rebuilding to GP38-2s included fully reconditioned cabs, 3600-gallon fuel tanks, D78 traction motors, and AR10 traction alternators, along with extended-range dynamic braking; the original 3000-horsepower turbocharged engines were replaced by 2000-horsepower, Roots-blown EMD 645 engines; the GP40-style three-fan configuration for radiator cooling was retained.
  5. Prior to being rebuilt to GP38-2s, 34 units (UP 1027-1055 and 1062) were operated on UP as leased GP40s, numbered UP 850-887, leased from Helm Financial starting in early 1989; less than ten years later, beginning in 1998, all were retired and returned to Helm, and rebuilt to GP38-2s or GP38-3s and leased back to UP as UP 2527-2588.
  6. Prior to being rebuilt to GP38-2s, 27 units (UP 1056-1061, 1063-1065, 1067, 1068, 1072-1079, and 1081-1088) operated on UP as former C&NW, D&RGW, and MKT GP40s; sold to Helm Financial on 29 May 1998; rebuilt to GP38-2s and leased to UP.
  7. Starting in February 2009, because all 60 units are owned by Helm Financial Corporation and leased to UP on a short-term lease, UP has decided that all of its short-term leased units should be in the numbers and ownership of the lease owner, meaning that these UP 2500 series units (assigned UP 1027 series numbers) are being renumbered to HLCX 1027 series numbers on the dates shown above.

General Notes:

  1. Total of nine MKT units went to UP at merger, numbered MKT 380-388.
  2. Built as Kennecott Copper Corp. (KCC) 779-class units; to MKT in late 1984.
  3. (Read more about the former Kennecott units in service in Utah)
  4. All units originally built with high-visibility cabs (26 inches higher than normal EMD cabs) for service in Kennecott's Bingham Canyon copper mine near Salt Lake City; the units were modified with lower cabs by National Railway Equipment, in one of that company's first projects, at a leased facility in Clearfield, Utah, in August through October 1984, and immediately entered service on MKT.
  5. On all except UP 1203, the entire cab was lowered by removing the 26 inches of extra height, but because the actual cab roof was then too low, a four-inch hump was added to allow clearance to open the cab interior electrical cabinet doors. The extra-height cab on UP 2353, ex MKT 383, originally KCC 782, was in very poor shape from wreck damage repair by Kennecott (the cab had been sheared off by a mining shovel in the Bingham Canyon Mine). National Railway Equipment replaced the entire cab with one from a retired Milwaukee Road SD45.
  6. UP 2357 (ex MKT 387) was the first of this group to be repainted to Union Pacific, completed on 13 December 1988; UP 2353 (ex MKT 383) was the last, completed on 25 January 1991.
  7. Assigned UP 2350-2358 in December 1988, all units renumbered; assigned UP 1200-1208 (not in sequence) in December 1999.

General Notes:

  1. Total of 20 MKT units went to UP at merger, numbered MKT 360-379; renumbered to UP 2359-2378 in August 1989 through October 1991; eight units still on roster after July 2000 to be renumbered to UP 1209-1216.
  2. All units were built after normal GP39-2 production had ceased and have larger radiator intake screens, along with other features of EMD's GP49 carbody.
  3. UP 1209-1216 (eight units) were purchased by UP on 15 June 1999 upon expiration of the original lease to MKT.
  4. Assigned UP 2359-2378 in December 1988, all units renumbered; assigned UP 2709-2728 in September 1997, no units renumbered; assigned UP 1209-1228 in December 1999.
  5. UP 1217-1228 are blank and not used; UP 2367-2359 retired in July 2000 prior to being renumbered to UP 1217-1228.

(UP 1300) SP 3197 SP 7600 Nov 1974 74619-1 10 Jul 2002 Lease expired and returned to GE; to Indiana Harbor Belt 4010.

General Notes:

  1. Built as SP 3197, a GP40P-2 passenger unit for commuter service in the San Francisco area. California's Department of Transportation took over the San Francisco commuter service as CalTrain, a public agency, in June 1985; SP 3197 (along with SP 3198 and 3199) was converted to a freight unit by removal of its steam generator and application of a larger fuel tank, renumbered to SP 7600 (SP 3198 and 3199 became SP 7601 and 7602), and reassigned to freight service, retaining the enclosure from its now-removed steam generator.
  2. UP 1300 is longer than a standard GP40-2 (62 feet, 8 inches versus 59 feet 2 inches), and were equipped with steam generators in a special enclosure at the rear of the unit's carbody.
  3. Assigned UP 5200 in September 1997, not renumbered; assigned UP 1300 in December 1999.
